Women in Sparta were known for their independent spirit. Compared to other women in ancient Greece, they enjoyed greater freedoms and held more power. Spartan females often received formal education, albeit separately from males. In part to attract potential partners, they engaged in a variety of athletic events, as well as singing and dancing competitions.
