Are Tattoos Permissible in Islam?

The Islamic Medicine Academy states that while natural and non-permanent tattoos, such as those made with henna, are allowed in Islam, permanent or semi-permanent tattoos are prohibited. It's noted that the Prophet Mohammed encouraged women to adorn their hands with color using natural substances like henna, whereas men are limited to applying henna only to their hair.
