Do Greek gods swear?
Approved answer
Do Greek gods use oaths?
The gods make oaths to ensure trust in their more dubious interactions with one another (Chapter 7.3). The river Styx serves as the universal witness for deities such as Demeter, Hermes—the trickster—and Hera, among others, but it does not apply to humans. (The seemingly unhinged Spartan King Cleomenes exemplifies this rule, according to Herodotus.)
