Baalbek is predominantly Shiite, with approximately two-thirds of its population identifying as such. However, the city also hosts a significant number of Sunni and Christian residents. Over the last two years, the municipality has been led by Sunni mayor Moustafa Chaal, who has actively served on the city council since 2004.
