As per the guidance of Sayyid Sistani, it is allowable for a male and female to engage in conversation and even spend time alone in a private setting, provided they do not feel at risk of committing sinful acts. However, it is not permitted to express romantic feelings towards a non-mahram, initiate a romantic relationship prior to marriage, or engage in playful banter with a non-mahram.
