A Khan can belong to either the Shia or Sunni branch of Islam. For instance, he might be a nawab like Saif Ali Khan, or he could be an uneducated individual hailing from a rural background, as was the case with Mehboob Khan, the director of Mother India. Furthermore, not every Khan can trace their heritage back to the Pathan communities of Afghanistan.
