Is Music Permitted in Islam?

Imam al-Ghazali cited several hadith and concluded that music is inherently permissible. He stated, "All these Ahadith are reported by al-Bukhari, and thus singing and playing are not considered haram." Additionally, he refers to a narration involving Khidr that expresses a positive stance on music.
