At one week old, your baby may not yet be smiling intentionally.

Newborns typically exhibit reflexive smiles, but these are not true social smiles. These smiles are involuntary and usually occur during sleep or due to natural physical reflexes. It might be several weeks before you'll see your baby smile purposefully in response to your interaction.
