Is poetry discouraged in Islam?

Understanding Poetry in Islam

Based on verses from the Quran and various Hadith, it appears that Islam generally discouraged the practice of poetry, particularly during the time when the Quran was being revealed. However, there are instances where the Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) seemed to support certain poets, such as Hassan Ibn Thaabit, at specific times.
