It wasn't until 1948 that legislation was enacted to officially permit women to serve in the military. Prior to this, however, many women had already contributed significantly during both World Wars, and figures such as Harriet Tubman and Mary Walker had participated in the Civil War, taking on roles as nurses, spies, and even serving as soldiers while posing as men.
