Until the 20th century, Iraq lacked a history of easel painting. The 19th century saw the flourishing of traditional arts, which encompassed metalwork, carpet weaving, glassblowing, ceramic tile creation, calligraphy, and wall murals. Many of these age-old practices can be traced back to the Assyrians of the 9th century.
