Recognizing a chance to free Arab territories from Turkish domination, and placing faith in the integrity of British officials who assured their commitment to support a unified Arab kingdom, Sharif Hussein bin Ali, the Emir of Mecca and King of the Arabs (and great-grandfather of King Hussein), initiated the Great Arab Revolt.
