Ismāʿīl I, born on July 17, 1487, in Ardabīl, Azerbaijan, and who passed away on May 23, 1524, in Ardabīl, present-day Safavid Iran, was the shah of Iran from 1501 to 1524. Renowned as a religious leader, he established the Safavid dynasty, marking the first Persian rule in Iran in 800 years. One of his significant contributions was converting Iran from Sunni Islam to the Twelver Shiʿi sect.
