Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) without an identifiable cause is characterized by at least three distinct instances of abdominal discomfort that occur within a three-month timeframe. These episodes can be quite intense, preventing the child from engaging in usual activities. It is estimated that this condition may affect as many as 30% of children aged between 4 and 12.
