The earliest known surgical procedure dates back to the Stone Age, where a leg amputation was performed on a child on the island of Borneo approximately 31,000 years ago. Additionally, around 6500 BCE, skulls discovered in France exhibit evidence of a basic surgical technique known as trepanation (or trephination), which involves creating an opening in the skull.
