Islam is founded on seven essential pillars: walayah, which is the highest and most significant of them all; it is through this and the walī (the Imām) that one can attain a true comprehension of the other pillars. These pillars include: ṭaharah (purification), ṣalah (prayer), zakah (purifying dues), ṣawm (fasting), hajj (pilgrimage), and jihād (striving).
