In ancient times, what is now Algeria was referred to as the Kingdom of Numidia. The inhabitants were known as Numidians and Imazighen, the latter meaning "Free men". Throughout the ages, as Europe met Africa, various groups of people arrived. Some settled in the region while others left their marks behind.
