In the remarkable year of 1533, an extraordinary event took place. Suleiman the Magnificent made the bold decision to liberate Hurrem from her status as a concubine in order to take her as his wife. Under Islamic law, a Sultan is not permitted to marry a slave, so to elevate Hurrem to the position of his queen, he first had to grant her freedom.
