In the biblical account, the initial tablets, which were written by the hand of God (Exodus 31:18), were shattered by Moses out of anger upon witnessing the Children of Israel engaging in the worship of a golden calf (Exodus 32:19). Subsequently, Moses carved out a new set of tablets, which were then inscribed anew by God (Exodus 34:1).
