In 747, a significant uprising spearheaded by Abū Muslim resulted in the overthrow of Marwān II, the final caliph of the Umayyad dynasty. This confrontation culminated in the Battle of the Great Zab River in 750, located in Mesopotamia, which led to the establishment of the first Abbasid caliph, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ.
