Cyanobacteria have a rich fossil history, with the oldest known fossils being these microorganisms found in Archaean rocks located in western Australia, which are dated to be around 3.5 billion years old. This is quite remarkable, considering that the oldest rocks are only slightly older, at 3.8 billion years!
