In the 1880s, imaginative students at the University of Oxford began to differentiate between two types of football: 'rugger' for rugby football and 'assoccer' for association football. This second term was eventually clipped to 'soccer' (sometimes spelled 'socker'), and the name quickly gained popularity beyond the university grounds.
