The ancient Greek poet Sappho is often recognized as the first to declare, around 2,600 years ago, that "what is beautiful is good." In a similar vein, the German romantic poet Friedrich Schiller expressed in 1882 that "physical beauty serves as a reflection of inner beauty, encompassing both spiritual and moral dimensions."
