Origins of the Rainbow Flag

The rainbow flag was designed by activist Gilbert Baker as a representation of pride, diversity, and unity within the LGBTQ+ community. This creation was initiated after he received a commission from Harvey Milk, who was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. The flag made its debut during the San Francisco Gay Freedom Parade in 1978.
