Inspirational Stories of the Female Companions

The female companions, known as “Al-Sahabiat,” were remarkable women who accompanied the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), embraced the revelations he received, and supported him in his mission. Through their dedication, they propagated the teachings of Islam, earning the pleasure of Allah (Exalted be He). In this article, we highlight some notable stories that showcase the strength and impact of these remarkable women.

The Story of Al-Khansaa

Al-Khansaa, whose full name was Tamadar bint Amr, experienced a deep personal tragedy during the pre-Islamic period when she learned of her brother Sakhr’s death. The news affected her profoundly, igniting intense sorrow in her heart. Her tears flowed incessantly, and she expressed her grief by composing numerous poems in his memory, despite not yet embracing Islam. One poignant excerpt from her poetry reads:

Is there a tear in your eye, or is it simply the eye’s defect,
Or did you shed tears when your house was left desolate?
As my thoughts of Sakhr come to mind,
A stream flows down my cheeks in abundant flow.

Sakhr was our leader and guide,
And when we gathered around the fire, it was he who inspired.
In the face of hunger, he would provide,
And he was a beacon of wisdom, like a torch burning bright.

After embracing Islam, she faced an even greater challenge when the call for jihad was issued. Al-Khansaa mobilized her four sons, urging them to fight in the cause of Allah. When she received the news of their martyrdom, she remained steadfast. Instead of mourning outwardly, she expressed her resolve with words of gratitude and faith, proclaiming, “Praise be to Allah who honored me with their martyrdom. I pray that Allah reunites me with them in His merciful abode.” This transformation exemplified the profound impact of her faith, filling her heart with conviction, patience, and belief.

The Tale of Khawla bint Tha’alba

Khawla bint Tha’alba was the wife of Aws ibn al-Samit, who participated in all the key battles alongside the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Khawla was renowned for her courage in speaking the truth, as evidenced by her encounter with Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

As Umar exited the mosque alongside Al-Jarood Al-Abdi, he was approached by a woman who greeted him warmly. Umar returned her greeting, but she responded sharply: “How far have you strayed, Umar? I remember you as Umar ibn al-Khattab at the market of Okaz, tending sheep with your stick. Time has flown, and now you bear the title of ‘Commander of the Faithful.’ Fear Allah in your leadership, and remember, those who dread retribution will find themselves closer to destruction.”

Al-Jarood Al-Abdi remarked that the woman was speaking too freely to the Commander of the Faithful, but Umar intervened, saying: “Leave her be, for this is Khawla bint Hakim, the wife of Aws ibn al-Samit, whose words were heard by Allah from above the seven heavens. Indeed, Umar has more reason to listen to her.” This interaction underscores the valuable contributions of female companions to the elevation of the Islamic community.
