Poems about Ramadan

Poem: The Crescent of Ramadan

Written by Ahmed Salem Ba’atab:

Tomorrow the glad tidings and triumph shall greet us
The stones rejoice with the fasting and sacred stones
Tomorrow the crescent of fasting will rise
In a radiant procession, while the night is agitated
Hearts, in their depth, lean towards Him
For His love brings sweet and vibrant dreams
Tomorrow our minarets will announce the good news
As revelations and warnings echo through the air
I stood among noble people waiting
For a precious guest, adorned with Allah’s light
We lightly drift and awaken to the memories of His qualities
We might get lost in reminiscences and overflow
I saw Him a year ago in our mosques
Lighting up the palms with the sun and moon
He bestows virtues upon people, a reminder
Which captures the hearing, feeling, and sight
And when He packed His bags, preparing to leave
My courage faltered, fear and unease enveloped me
My soul trembled amidst my ribs and struggled
Who, like me, can withstand the blows of sin?
I did not come to complain, O Ramadan, of my supplications
But rather, I came seeking forgiveness for the transgressions of my hand
My records in the registry of good are bare
Without adornment, and my garment has felt the arrogance
O Ramadan, we extended our hands to the call
While calamities and changes were upon us
Hearts repudiated the truth while the oppressive and indulgent succumbed
My words touched his ears, and appeared
Flowing from His lips were verses and surahs
He did not withdraw compassion; rather, he said, in trust
“O Lord, Your mercy, for they are human.”

Poem: Ramadan

Written by Fatimah Mohammed Al-Qurani:

“The halfway point” is lost… and on the way the “remaining”
Amidst the hustle of markets… and dishes
Our morning begins “Stand for the Teacher“… feeble…
This… and that one is captive to silence
Heavy loads drag us… we pull them…
The lack of reason has blazed the pupils
And our evenings… each one mumbles: “Enough…
Is there no cure for the affliction of routine?!”
Chaos resides in our kitchens… the pots wail
Bursting with flavors all around
And our rush at sunset is as if…
The path was lost to us… and there is no cupbearer
And “our night prayers”… from “Rita” to…
“Marcel” for “Zinedine”— what a race!!
O season of abundant good…
Gathering us amidst the pangs of poverty!
The “time of temptation” has turned “our rituals”
O opportunity of forgiveness and freedom.
