Symptoms of Helicobacter Pylori Infection
In most cases, individuals infected with Helicobacter pylori, commonly known as stomach bacteria, do not display any noticeable symptoms. While the reasons for this lack of symptoms remain unclear, it is believed that some people may have a natural immunity that enables them to resist the negative effects of this bacteria. However, when symptoms do manifest, they may include the following:
Abdominal Pain
The presence of this bacteria can lead to inflammation and discomfort in the stomach, resulting in symptoms such as indigestion, upper abdominal pain, and a burning sensation. In severe cases, it may also cause painful ulcers in the upper digestive tract. This occurs because the bacteria damage the tissues of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine, known as the duodenum. The characteristics of the pain can be detailed as follows:
Timing of Pain
The abdominal pain often occurs two to three hours after eating and may be experienced during the night when the stomach is empty.
Duration of Pain
Typically, the pain is mild and can persist for several days to weeks, disappearing only to return at a later time.
Relief from Pain
Generally, the pain subsides after the individual takes medications that reduce stomach acid, such as antacids.
Nausea and Vomiting
Helicobacter pylori infection can irritate the stomach lining, leading to feelings of nausea—an uncomfortable sensation often preceding vomiting. Vomiting involves the forceful expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth, which may sometimes be accompanied by blood or may present with small particles resembling coffee grounds.
Secondary Symptoms of Helicobacter Pylori Infection
Other symptoms associated with Helicobacter pylori infection may include:
- Excessive belching
- Abdominal bloating
- Heartburn
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Sudden weight loss
- Decreased hunger
