Fish

Fish, a vital group of vertebrate marine animals, exist in a wide variety of shapes and species. They can be found in both freshwater and saltwater environments, making up nearly thirty thousand distinct species in marine ecosystems. However, humans only consume around fifty of these species. Most fish reproduce through eggs, and they serve as an essential food source for human health, being rich in various vitamins, especially B2, B12, and D, as well as important minerals like iodine, manganese, and zinc. This article will explore the fish species that are prevalent in Kuwait.

Types of Fish in Kuwait

  • **Skan Fish** (*Raunchycen canadum*) is a popular fish species in Kuwait, characterized by its long, slender, and rounded shape. It features a crescent-shaped tail, with the lower jaw being longer than the upper jaw. The fish has a dark brown color on its back, white on its belly, and yellow near the tail, with silvery stripes along its sides. Skan fish are commonly found near islands and open water areas, and they prefer to eat mackerel and anchovies. They are typically caught using nets and traps.
  • **Nekr Fish** is considered one of the finest local species in Kuwait. It thrives in deep rocky areas like the Wananah and reefs, as well as within sunken ships. This fish favors anchovies and shrimp for food and is caught using hooks and lines. It is important to note that Nekr fish are currently threatened with extinction.
  • **Nahas Fish** breeds in winter, particularly in October and November. This species is frequently found in marine channels such as Khawee and Qairou. They are usually caught using a line with a thickness of 70, along with spearguns and long rods measuring up to one meter in length. Nahas fish prefer to feed on shrimps, anchovies, and particularly their heads.
  • **Sbeiti Fish** is known for its extreme caution and calm demeanor, necessitating patience from fishermen. Sbeiti fish inhabit tranquil areas, often found in Hayshan, Alowhah, and the shallow rocky waters. Their preferred diet includes live shrimp, yellowtail, and sirf fish. They can be caught using several methods, such as lines, traps, and nets.
  • **Shaam Fish** is distinguished by its swift movements and keen intelligence. It is abundant in rocky regions like reefs and shallow waters such as Fintash and Rashdan. Shaam fish are caught using specific types of fishing gear such as medium-sized rods and specialized hooks, with a preference for diets consisting of yellowtail, poultry entrails, and small fish. The best times to catch Shaam fish are during the lunar phases and on windy days, particularly at the end of each lunar month.
