What were Spartans scared of?

Fear of Helot Revolt

The Spartans, due to their limited numbers, were perpetually anxious about the possibility of a helot uprising. Each year, the ephors, who were the leaders in Sparta, would formally declare war on the helots upon taking office. This declaration allowed them to kill helots whenever they wished without transgressing their religious beliefs.
