Ayat al-Kursi and Its Benefits

The Virtue of Ayat al-Kursi

Various authentic Hadiths from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) affirm that Ayat al-Kursi is the greatest verse in the Holy Quran. It is noted for containing the name of Allah (the Most High) in its most exalted form. Those who consistently recite this verse benefit from its protection, creating a shield for themselves, their homes, and their families against the influence of Satan. This verse is also considered a remedy by the permission of Allah, offering protection from ailments, magic, the evil eye, possession, envy, witchcraft, and those who practice it. However, the protective qualities of Ayat al-Kursi are most effective for those who regularly recite it, as opposed to those who merely turn to it as a remedy after experiencing affliction or illness. Furthermore, it is mentioned that reciting Ayat al-Kursi is a means to enter Paradise, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death.”

An Insight into the Interpretation of Ayat al-Kursi

Ayat al-Kursi derives its name from the mention of the “Kursi” (which translates to “Throne” or “Footstool”) within the verse. The Ayah begins with the exaltation of the name of Allah, highlighting His uniqueness as the sole deity for all of creation. It conveys that Allah is Ever-Living and does not die, as well as being Sustainer, who neither slumbers nor sleeps. Additionally, Allah (Exalted and Majestic) proclaims His sovereignty over the heavens, the earth, and all that resides within them. Due to this immense dominion and magnificence, no one has the ability to intercede on behalf of another except for whom He allows. The verse emphasizes Allah’s knowledge and understanding, encapsulating all hidden matters and affairs, which humankind cannot comprehend unless they are informed by His command. It also refers to the “Kursi” as a symbol of His greatness and the vastness of His authority. Ibn Abbas noted that the Kursi is akin to a place for one’s feet, while the Throne cannot be measured. Despite His grandeur, Allah (Exalted) does not find it burdensome to maintain the heavens, the earth, and all the beings within them.
