Verses Regarding Mockery of Religion
In the Quran, Allah – the Exalted – has highlighted numerous verses that describe the state and consequences of those who mock religion. Below are some relevant examples:
- (وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ* لا تَعْتَذِرُوا قَدْ كَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ) – This verse makes it clear that their mockery is done with the intention of playfulness, illustrating that trivializing the verses of Allah and His Messenger leads to disbelief. Allah – Glory be to Him – warns the hypocrites: (قُلِ اسْتَهْزِئُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَا تَحْذَرُونَ).
- (وَإِذَا رَأَوْكَ إِن يَتَّخِذُونَكَ إِلَّا هُزُوًا أَهَذَا الَّذِي بَعَثَ اللَّهُ رَسُولًا* إِن كَادَ لَيُضِلُّنَا عَنْ آلِهَتِنَا لَوْلَا أَن صَبَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا وَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ حِينَ يَرَوْنَ الْعَذَابَ مَنْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا) – Here, the polytheists mock the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he advises them against idolatry.
- (وإذا رأيت الذين يخوضون في آياتنا فأعرض عنهم حتى يخوضوا في حديث غيره وإما ينسينك الشيطان فلا تقعد بعد الذكرى مع القوم الظالمين) – Imam Ibn Jurayyj explains that the polytheists used to approach the Prophet (peace be upon him) with the desire to listen, only to later indulge in mockery.
- (وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غيره إنكم إذًا مثلهم) – This verse commands the believers to refrain from sitting with those who mock the verses of Allah, emphasizing the seriousness of such actions.
- (وَإِذا لَقُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قالُوا آمَنَّا وَإِذا خَلَوْا إِلى شَياطِينِهِمْ قالُوا إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّما نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِؤُن، اللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِي طُغْيانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ) – This verse illustrates the hypocrisy and mockery in the hearts of these individuals, who fail to recognize that Allah sees them and extends respite to them as a means of leading them into further misguidance.
Understanding Mockery of Religion
Mockery of religion involves a casual attitude towards worship practices, statements, and terms associated with it, which can escalate to a level of insensitivity and irreverence. This behavior may lead individuals to mock Islamic principles, Quranic verses, or prophetic traditions, which is unacceptable and constitutes a serious offense. Those who engage in such mockery risk falling into disbelief due to their derision of the aspects of Allah’s remembrance, the Qur’an, or the Messenger.
Consequences and Dangers of Mockery of Religion
There are significant repercussions and dangers associated with mocking religion, including the following:
- The individual may experience disgrace and humiliation.
- Such mockery is a blatant violation of Allah’s command, resulting in His displeasure and potential punishment.
- Mockery serves as a herald of doom, as evidenced by the fate of the people of Noah who faced destruction for their disbelief and mockery of him.
- It diminishes the dignity of the mocker and strips them of their moral integrity.
- The mocker harms themselves by belittling what Allah has revered and trivializing what He has magnified.
- Mockery can lead to spiritual death and negligence, so that on the Day of Judgment, the mocker regrets what they have done.
- Mocking is characteristic of disbelievers and hypocrites, and believers are warned against resembling them.
- Engaging in mockery is a prohibited act condemned by Islamic law.
- Such behavior reflects ignorance, as one who understands the greatness of Allah, His verses, His Messenger, and His religion would distance themselves from derision.
