Poetic Verses About a Loved One
Poem: The Beloved Sends Messages of Fragrance
The poem “The Beloved Sends Messages of Fragrance” was penned by the Omani poet Ibn Shaykan Al-Salmi, born in 1866 in the village of Hawqin. He received his education under esteemed scholars in Oman and devoted many years to teaching religious sciences. His only printed poetry collection was published in 1979, titled “Divan of Ibn Shaykan Al-Salmi,” and he passed away in 1928.
The poem opens with:
“So it came, wafting with the breeze of dawn,
As it passed us, intoxicated, its fragrance enveloped us,
Enwrapped in the darkness and the crowns of trees,
As its cups floated through the stems of the branches.
They swayed gently from the thrill of inebriation,
And received the ruins of hearts that were tender.
The coolness brushed away the flames of desire,
For the beloved, even if enveloped in indifference,
To fulfill their obligations is like a free soul,
Faith leads to unity and becomes a sign,
Erasing misery like water or like fire.
…
His essence spreads goodness amidst the ruins of the oppressors,
For he traversed the world, his miracles shared; ever-revered.
