The Most Beautiful Short Stories of the Companions

The Conversion of Mus’ab ibn Umair

Mus’ab ibn Umair – may Allah be pleased with him – was among the most distinguished youths of Mecca, renowned for his elegance and fondness shown by his mother. Upon hearing about the Prophet Muhammad’s – peace be upon him – call to Islam, Mus’ab could not resist embracing the faith, transitioning from disbelief to monotheism. However, he chose to conceal his conversion to avoid persecution from his tribe. This concealment did not last long; soon, his mother discovered his conversion and stripped him of privileges and affection. Mus’ab faced severe torture and harassment in attempts to force him to abandon his faith. Nevertheless, he remained steadfast in Islam and later migrated to Medina, where he participated alongside the Prophet in the Battle of Uhud, ultimately being chosen by Allah – the Most Exalted – to be a martyr during that battle.

The Death of Sa’d ibn Mu’adh

The noble companion Sa’d ibn Mu’adh – may Allah be pleased with him – suffered severe wounds during the Battle of the Trench (Ahzab). He fervently prayed that Allah – the Most High – would not take his life until he witnessed the punishment of the Jews of Medina, who had allied with the confederates against the Muslims. The Prophet – peace be upon him – tended to Sa’d’s wounds and subsequently focused on the Banu Qurayza tribe. He achieved a decisive victory over them, wherein Sa’d passed a notable judgment declaring that their men should be executed and their women taken captive. Sa’d was wounded again, which ultimately led to his death, marking him as a martyr. Following his passing, it was reported to the Prophet – peace be upon him – that the Throne of Allah – the Most High – trembled at Sa’d’s death. Ibn Umar – may Allah be pleased with both of them – narrated, “The Throne shook due to Sa’d ibn Mu’adh’s love for meeting Allah.”

Abu Dhadhaah’s Zeal for Paradise

One day, a disagreement arose between an orphan and a companion over a date palm tree, with the orphan believing it belonged to him. When the Prophet – peace be upon him – arrived to arbitrate, he awarded the date palm to the companion. This decision saddened the orphan, causing him to shed tears. The Prophet – peace be upon him – showed empathy and said to the companion, “Give it to him, and you will have a palm tree in Paradise.” However, the companion declined this offer. Hearing this exchange, Abu Dhadhaah – may Allah be pleased with him – inquired whether he would indeed receive a tree in Paradise if he donated the date palm to the orphan. The Prophet confirmed this. Consequently, Abu Dhadhaah offered the companion an entire garden filled with date palms in exchange for that single tree, and the companion accepted the proposal. The Prophet acknowledged Abu Dhadhaah’s generosity, remarking later, “There may be a branch of dates in Paradise for Abu Dhadhaah’s son.”
