The Most Beautiful Songs of Warda

Warda Al-Jazairia

Warda Al-Jazairia, born Warda Muhammad Fattouki, is a renowned Algerian singer. She was born in France to a father of Algerian descent and a Lebanese mother. Warda has two children, Riad and Widad.

Her singing career began in France, where she performed songs for several well-known artists of her time, including Umm Kulthum, Asmahan, and Abdel Halim Hafez, before launching her solo career. Warda made her cinematic debut in Egypt in 1960. Notably, the late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser requested her inclusion in the patriotic operetta “Watan Al-Akbar.” However, an ensuing controversy led to her being banned from entering Egypt, a prohibition that lasted until the presidency of Anwar Sadat.

After a brief hiatus from her musical career following her marriage, Warda returned to music following her divorce. She later married the late Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi. Her artistic breakthrough came with the song “Awkati Bithlou,” originally intended for Umm Kulthum but remained unreleased until Warda performed it in 1979 after it was held by composer Sid Makawi. Warda passed away in her home in Cairo and was laid to rest in Algeria.
