Poem on Ramadan

By Fatima Mohammed Al-Qarni:

“Half” is lost… and on the road “the rest”

In the hustle of the markets and tables

And our morning: “Rise for the teacher”… weary…

This… and that is hostage to silence

Piled up, our footsteps dragging… as we pull them…

Hope is fading… the eyes ignited

And our evenings… each mumbling: “Enough for us…”

The affliction of ‘routine’ has yet to have a cure!

Our kitchens are chaotic; the sound of our pots…

Has overflowed with every flavor

And our rush at sunset is as if…

The path got lost… and there is no cupbearer

And “our standing” at night… from “Rita” to…

“Marcel” for “Zidan”… what a race!!

Oh, season of goodness fleeting through us…

Brought together by the burns of poverty!

“The time of temptation” has turned “our rituals”

O opportunity for forgiveness and emancipation.

Poem on Ramadan Crescent

By Ahmed Salem Ba’athib:

Tomorrow, the glad tidings and victory will shine upon us

And the stones will celebrate those who fast and the sacred

Tomorrow, the crescent of fasting will appear

In a radiant procession as the night grows dark

Hearts resonate with longing within

For love has a sweet reverie, fresh and green

Tomorrow, our minarets will announce joyful news

And news flows from the verses and the warnings

I stand among honorable people, waiting

For a precious guest clothed in the light of God

We fall asleep and awaken to memories of His character

We nearly drown in remembrance and we break our fast

I saw Him a year ago in our mosques

Carrying in His palms the sun and the moon

He grants His virtues to people as a reminder

They resonate with the ear, feeling, and sight

When He unfurled the stakes of separation, He bid me farewell

Courage overwhelmed me, fear and anxiety seized me

I stammered, my heart trembling within, but the likes of me

Can hardly bear the slaps of sin

I did not come to plead, O Ramadan, my supplications

But rather, I came to apologize for what my hands have earned

My records are bare in the ledger of goodness

Lacking in beauty, and my robe has been stretched by age

O Ramadan, indeed we extend our hands for salvation

And events and alterations have surged among us

Hearts have turned away from the truth when seeking

To the arenas of tyranny and indulgence

So my words touched His hearing, and they became

Flowing from His lips were verses and chapters

And He did not show disdain, but rather replied in patience

O Lord, O Lord of mercy, they are but mortals.

Poem on Ramadan by Al-Sanousi

By Mohammed bin Ali Al-Sanousi:

O Ramadan, month of light

Freeing us from the darkness’s grip

Illuminate with the lights of guidance

The souls ensnared in rubble

And let the purity of sanctity

Enlighten life’s visions from the gloom

And pour our emotions with piety

And envelop our desires with peace

O Ramadan, hope of thirsty souls

Longing for tranquility

O month, or rather a river, flowing

From its sweetness across mankind

Souls are afloat, gliding

Like flocks of doves

White, adorned with piety

Illuminated by fasting

Delicate as fragrant flowers

Pure as the dew of clouds

Transparent in feeling, dedicated

Refined in speech

She is precious against whims, elevated

Above a world of dirt

She ascended to the light that

Filled existence with a smile

A light from the Criterion that lifts

To the highest degree

Its verses heal the wounds

And its expressions quench thirst

O Ramadan! Forgive me, for I stand

Neither behind nor before

We slept and those in darkness spiraled

And what shall the sleepers find?

The road was long and lost

And the crowds have pressed us down

Aspirations tightly held

And slipped from our grasp

The whims mocked us and galloped away

Laughing amid chaos

The souls’ ambitions hesitated

Neither rising nor breaking through

A condition that weighs down the honorable

As they suffer, the despicable rejoice

O Ramadan, the mouth that refrains

From drink or food

Assumed that fasting is merely from food

This is the truth of being

It makes the body suffer, akin to a sword

If only he fasted from backbiting and the illicit

And cleaned his soul from

Lies, deceit, and evils

And from standing, if only he stood

In the path of righteousness

O Ramadan! A heartfelt plea

For Muslims and for peace

It soars with prayers and supplications

Igniting a fire within

O Allah, Glorified and Exalted

The Giver of great kindness

May Allah guide the leaders

To righteousness in all decisions.
