Verses Revealed About Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq
Several verses from the Holy Qur’an have been revealed in reference to Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq. Here are a few notable examples:
- Allah, the Exalted, states: (O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion— Allah will bring forth a people He will love and who will love Him).
- Allah, the Exalted, says: (When they were in the cave, and he said to his companion, “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.”).
- Allah, the Exalted, proclaims: (This is a declaration for the people and to warn thereby, and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded).
- Allah, the Exalted, mentions: (Is one who is devoutly obedient during the hours of the night, prostrating and standing in prayer, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord).
- Allah, the Exalted, states: (And he who brought the truth and [those who] believed in it).
- Allah, the Exalted, notes: (And for whoever fears the position of his Lord are two gardens).
- Allah, the Exalted, asserts: (But as for he who gives and fears [Allah] and believes in the best reward, We will ease him toward ease).
- Allah, the Exalted, says: (And he will be removed far from it who is most pious, who gives his wealth to purify himself).
- Allah, the Exalted, describes: (And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive. And those who respond to their lord and establish prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend. And those who, when disaster strikes them, defend themselves. And the retribution for an evil deed is an evil one like it; but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation – his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like the wrongdoers. And the penalty is only upon those who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment. And whoever is patient and forgives – indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination).
Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq
Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, whose full name is Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Amir ibn Amr ibn K’ab ibn Sa’d ibn Taim ibn Murrah ibn K’ab ibn Lu’ayy Al-Qurashi Al-Taimi, is linked to the Prophet Muhammad through Murrah ibn K’ab. He is the son of Abu Quhafa, whose name was Uthman, and his mother was Umm al-Khayr Salma, the daughter of Sukhr ibn Amir. Born three years after the Year of the Elephant, Abu Bakr passed away on Monday, the 22nd of Jumada al-Thani, in the 13th year of Hijrah.
Titles and Nicknames
Abu Bakr’s nickname is attributed to the exceptional qualities he embodied, earning him the title ‘Al-Siddiq’ due to his unwavering belief in the Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet himself said, “Indeed, Allah sent me to you, and you said: ‘You lied in the beginning,’ while Abu Bakr said: ‘You spoke the truth and supported me with himself and his wealth. Will you leave my companion?’ So thereafter, he was not harmed.”
He was also called ‘Al-‘Atiq’ because the Prophet said, “You are free from Hellfire,” which is interpreted as a reflection of his virtuous character. Some suggest it was also due to his handsome appearance and the honorable nature of his lineage.
The Virtue of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq
Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq is widely regarded as the foremost companion of the Prophet Muhammad. He relinquished worldly possessions and embraced asceticism, defending Islam during its early days. He stood by the Prophet in times of skepticism from others and provided unwavering support during trying times. Initially, he was the Prophet’s companion, and eventually, he became the first Caliph after the Prophet’s passing, being the first man to enter Paradise.
Under his leadership, he fought against the apostates who turned away from Islam after the Prophet’s death and addressed efforts against those who withheld zakat. He also initiated military campaigns to expand into Persia and Byzantine territories.
Although only 142 hadiths have been reported from Abu Bakr, this is due to his passing before the formalization of hadith compilation, despite his close companionship with the Prophet. The Prophet remarked, “The most trustworthy person to me in his companionship and wealth is Abu Bakr. If I were to take a close friend from my Ummah, I would have taken Abu Bakr, but Islamic brotherhood suffices. There should remain in the mosque no doorway except for the one belonging to Abu Bakr.”
