The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of good character in numerous hadiths. It serves as a key factor for a Muslim’s entry into Paradise and is essential for gaining the love and acceptance of Allah. Good character enhances the rewards of believers, multiplying their merits on the Day of Judgment. Those who embody good character will have the privilege of sitting alongside the Prophet on that day, being among the closest to him. Furthermore, with good character, Muslims can attain the ranks of those who fast and pray. Good character is considered one of the most commendable actions of a believer, leading to a longer life and signifying true faith. Among the notable hadiths underscoring the value of good character is the statement, “Indeed, the most beloved among you to me and the closest to me on the Day of Judgment are the ones with the best character.” Likewise, when asked about the most common reasons for people’s entry into Paradise, the Prophet mentioned, “Fear of Allah and good character,” while also noting that the most significant causes of people entering Hell are transgressions of the tongue and private parts.

The Prophet sent Mu’adh ibn Jabal to Yemen to call people to Islam and resolve their disputes, instructing him to engage with people through exemplary conduct. The significance of good character is reflected in Allah’s command to His Messenger regarding it, serving as one of the most effective means of spreading Islam. Many have embraced Islam due to the kindness and good behavior of its followers. A devoted Muslim aspires to embody good character, as it leads to success, salvation, and overall well-being, making one a source of love, even among adversaries.
Expressions of Good Character in Daily Life
As noted by Al-Safarini, manifestations of good character include treating others as one would wish to be treated, refraining from arrogance towards fellow Muslims, showing humility, and exhibiting compassion towards children while respecting the elderly. Additional qualities include gentleness, controlling one’s anger, generosity, warm greetings, pleasant companionship, responding to the invitations of fellow Muslims, mending ruptures between them, forgiving their mistakes, covering their faults, and avoiding the sowing of discord by gossiping. Lastly, it emphasizes forgiveness of wrongdoers and exercising patience with the ignorant.
