Prayers for Healing the Sick

Healing

Healing is defined as the removal of illness. To say that Allah has healed someone from a disease indicates that He has cured and restored them to health. The Holy Quran stands as the best remedy for ailments and sicknesses. Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sa’di stated, “The healing contained in the Quran is comprehensive, addressing the healing of hearts as well as the physical ailments of the body.” Numerous individuals during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were treated through the recitation of the Quran and legal supplications. While Islam encourages the pursuit of tangible remedies and medications, it also emphasizes the importance of healing through the Quran and authentic prayers.

Supplications for the Sick

Prayer is a significant act of worship and a source of comfort for hearts, souls, and bodies. Supplicating for the sick is highly commendable and brings great reward. Here are some beautiful prayers for healing:

  • Oh Allah, remove the suffering, Lord of mankind. Cure is in Your hands, and no one can alleviate it except You, O Lord of the worlds. There is no refuge or escape from You except to You; indeed, You are capable of all things.
  • We ask You, O Allah, by Your most beautiful names and exalted attributes, and by Your mercy that encompasses all things, to bless us with swift healing, not leaving any wound uncured, any pain unrelieved, or any disease unhealed.
  • O Allah, You who restore the sick to health and respond to the pleas of the distressed, we implore You by every name of Yours to heal every ill person.
  • There is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. There is no god but Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the mighty throne. There is no god but Allah, alone with no partner; His is the dominion, and for Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things.
  • O Allah, envelop us with the garment of health and well-being, swiftly and surely, cure us, pardon us, and encompass us with Your compassion and forgiveness. Embrace us with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
  • O Allah, heal our patients and the patients of Muslims with healing that leaves no trace of sickness. O You who restores the sick to health and answers the prayers of the distressed, heal every ill person.
  • My Lord, remove the suffering, Lord of mankind; heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no trace of sickness. Remove the suffering, Lord of mankind, for the healing is in Your hands, and no one can alleviate it except You, O Lord of the worlds.
  • O Lord of the worlds, remove the suffering, Lord of mankind; heal, for You are the Healer; there is no healing except Your healing.
  • In the name of Allah, I seek protection for myself from everything that harms me and from the evil of every envious soul or eye. In the name of Allah, I seek healing. What Allah wills happens, and what He does not will does not happen; there is no power and no strength except through Allah. I ask Allah, the Almighty, Lord of the mighty throne, to heal you and all sick Muslims.
  • In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing in the heavens or earth can cause harm; He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing (repeated three times).

The Quran as a Healing Source

Allah says: “And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers; and it increases not the wrongdoers except in loss.” (Quran 17:82). The Quran serves as a remedy for both the heart and the body. It is beneficial for the patient to also treat themselves using specific verses and chapters from the Quran:

  • Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening): “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the Straight Path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.”
  • Ayat Al-Kursi (Verse of the Throne): “Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
  • Verses from the end of Surah Al-Baqarah: “The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His Books and His messengers, [saying], ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey. [Seek Your] forgiveness, our Lord. To You is the final destination…’” (Quran 2:285-286).
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas (The Sincerity): “Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'”
  • Surah Al-Falaq (The Daybreak): “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak from the evil of that which He created and from the evil of darkness when it settles and from the evil of the blowers in knots and from the evil of an envier when he envies.'”
  • Surah An-Naas (The Mankind): “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer – who whispers in the breasts of mankind – from among jinn and among men.'”
  • His saying: “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.” (Quran 21:83)
