Verses on Happiness in the Noble Qur’an
The Noble Qur’an addresses the concept of happiness in various verses, using either the term “happiness” itself or its derivatives. Additionally, synonyms for happiness, such as joy and contentment, are also utilized. This article will focus on highlighting these significant verses. Below are the relevant excerpts:
Verses Containing the Term Happiness
The derivatives of the term “happiness” appear in two specific verses of Surah Hud:
- (On the Day when the soul shall stand forth [to plead], none shall speak except by His permission. Among them will be the wretched and the happy. As for those who are wretched, they will be in the Fire and will be there exhaling and inhaling, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Indeed, your Lord is Exalted in Might and Wise.)
- (And as for those who are happy, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. This is a gift that shall never be cut off.)
Verses Featuring Synonyms of Happiness
The Qur’an does not limit its discussion on happiness to the word itself but also includes numerous synonyms such as joy and glad tidings. Below are the verses that feature such terminology:
- (And do not think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision. They are rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty and they receive glad tidings about those who have not yet joined them from behind. No fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve.)
- (O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers. Say, ‘In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy, in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate.’)
- (The Romans have been defeated in the nearby land, and they, after their defeat, will be victorious within a few years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And on that Day, the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah. He grants victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.)
- (And when We give the people a taste of mercy, they rejoice in it; but when disaster strikes them because of what their own hands have earned, then indeed, man becomes despondent.)
- (And if they turn away, [O Muhammad], then We have not sent you as a guardian over them. Your duty is only to deliver the message. And when We let man taste Our mercy, he rejoices in it; but if an ill befalls them because of what their hands have earned, then man is ungrateful.)
Verses Discussing the Causes of Happiness
It is well known that contentment is a means to achieve happiness and represents one of its highest forms. Therefore, the verses discussing contentment can also be categorized under the theme of happiness. Here are some relevant excerpts:

- (And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.)
