Prophetic Supplications from the Quran and Sunnah
There are numerous authentic prayers recommended for the healing of the sick, including the following:
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “In the name of Allah, repeat three times, and then say seven times: I seek refuge with Allah and His Power from the evil I find and fear.”
- “Remove affliction, O Lord of mankind, and heal; You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no trace of illness.”
- “In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can cause harm in the earth or in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing,” repeated three times.
- “There is no harm; it is a purification, if Allah wills.”
- “O Allah, grant me health in my body; O Allah, grant me health in my hearing; O Allah, grant me health in my sight.”
- Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah over the sick person: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us on the Straight Path, the path of those who have received Your grace; not the path of those who have brought down wrath upon themselves, nor of those who have gone astray.”
- Reciting the two protectors (Al-Mu’awwidhatayn) over the sick person; these are Surah Al-Falaq: “Say, ‘I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak from the evil of that which He created and from the evil of the darkness when it settles and from the evil of the blowers in knots and from the evil of an envier when he envies’,” and Surah An-Nas: “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the breasts of mankind, of jinn and of men.’”
- Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas: “Say, ‘He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.’”
- Ayat Al-Kursi: “Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
- The last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah: “The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His Books and His messengers, [saying], ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey; [grant us] Your forgiveness, our Lord. To You is the final destination.’ Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or made a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”
- “Our Lord, Allah who is in the heavens, sanctified be Your name! Your command in the heavens and the earth is as Your mercy is in the heavens. So make Your mercy upon the earth, forgive us our sins and transgressions. You are the Lord of the good, send down mercy and healing from Your healings upon this pain so that it may be cured.”

The Reward of Patience in Illness
Illness is a test, and a true believer is one who praises and thanks Allah during times of health and prosperity, and who remains patient and fervently prays during times of distress and sickness. The reward for the patient is immense. Numerous hadiths highlight the great reward for those who endure illness, including:
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “When a servant has a rank with Allah that he has not yet attained through his deeds, Allah tests him in his body, his wealth, or his children and then grants him patience until he reaches the rank which Allah has destined for him.”
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, the greater the trial, the greater the reward; and when Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is pleased has (earned) His pleasure, and whoever is displeased has (earned) His wrath.”
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the people of health will wish that their skins had been cut with scissors when the reward for the afflicted is given.”
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “If a servant falls ill or travels, he will be recorded with the same deeds he used to do while he was healthy and residing.”
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor grief befalls a believer, not even a thorn that pricks him, except that Allah expiates for some of his sins.”
