Friday in Islam
God Almighty has preferred Friday over all other days, designating it as a special occasion for Muslims alongside the two Eid celebrations of Fitr and Adha. He mentioned it in His Holy Book: “O you who have believed, when the call to prayer is announced on the day of Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if you only knew. And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.” The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, emphasized the significance of this day and encouraged us to make the most of its moments through several noble hadiths, among which are:
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “Whoever performs ablution on Friday and takes a bath, arrives early, walks without riding, comes closer to the Imam, listens, and does not engage in idle talk, then for every step he takes, he will earn the reward of a year of fasting and prayer.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “No Muslim dies on the day of Friday or during the night of Friday except that Allah protects him from the trial of the grave.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “Seek the hour that is hoped for on Friday after the prayer of Asr until the sun sets.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “The five prayers and the Friday prayer to the next Friday are expiation for whatever occurs in between them, as long as major sins are not committed.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “This is a day of celebration that Allah has made for Muslims. Whoever attends Friday prayer, let them take a bath. If they have perfume, let them apply it. And be mindful of the tooth-stick.”
