Women’s Clothing Guidelines
In order for women’s clothing to be considered appropriate and in line with the principles of Islamic law, certain conditions must be met:
- Conditions Related to Tailoring and Design:
- The clothing must adequately cover the entire body, concealing any parts that are not permissible for a woman to show to non-mahram men.
- The garment should be loose-fitting and allow for comfortable movement; tight clothing that outlines body parts is prohibited.
- The clothing must not resemble that of non-believers.
- It should not imitate men’s clothing.
- Conditions Related to the Type of Clothing:
- The garment must be non-transparent, ensuring that the body remains covered.
- The clothing should be modest, avoiding garments that are overly ostentatious and may lead to controversy.
- While attractive, the clothing should not possess any embellishments that draw excessive attention.
Men’s Clothing Guidelines
The general principle regarding clothing is that it is permissible unless explicitly prohibited by religious texts. Below are some important guidelines regarding permissible attire for men:
- Wearing clothing particular to non-Muslims is forbidden to avoid imitation.
- It is also prohibited to wear items that mimic women’s attire.
- Muslims are encouraged to maintain cleanliness in their clothing, avoiding arrogance or exaggeration.
- Men should not wear garments that reveal the ‘awrah, such as transparent fabrics.
- It is recommended for Muslim men to wear white clothing.
- Men are forbidden from allowing their garments to extend below their ankles, with the length of clothing should not exceed the ankles.
- Wearing clothing that is known for its distinctiveness or fame, setting one apart from others, is prohibited.
Women’s Adornment Guidelines
Adornment for women can be categorized into three types based on legal rulings:
- Permissible Adornment: This includes any form of adornment that is permitted by Islamic law, as long as it is not harmful, such as colorful clothing, silk, jewelry, and perfumes.
- Prohibited Adornment: These are forms of decoration that have been forbidden by religious texts, such as eyebrow plucking, tattoos, and hair extensions.
- Recommended Adornment: This type includes adornments encouraged by Islamic teachings, such as adhering to natural beauty practices.
Men’s Adornment Guidelines
Men should choose their forms of adornment that are permissible within the framework of their religion and suitable for their masculinity and cultural norms. It is inappropriate for men to use cosmetics merely for decoration, as such practices are typically associated with women. Instead, characteristics of masculinity, such as ruggedness and strength, are more fitting. Men are prohibited from using beauty products that are exclusively for women, like lipstick, due to concerns of imitation. However, using products designed to treat skin issues, like acne treatments, is permissible as it falls under the category of remedy and healthcare. Furthermore, men must avoid adornment with gold or silk, as well as the use of necklaces or bracelets, as these are typically considered women’s adornments.
