Short Prophetic Sayings
The term “Hadith” refers to the sayings, actions, approvals, and characteristics – both physical and moral – attributed to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. This article presents a selection of prophetic sayings concerning the significance of Ramadan, the benefits of remembrance (dhikr), and provisions (rizq).
Hadiths on Ramadan
A myriad of Hadiths in the noble Sunnah highlight the virtues of the blessed month of Ramadan and the merits of worship during this period. Some of these Hadiths include:
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “In Paradise, there is a gate called Ar-Rayan, through which the fasting people will enter on the Day of Resurrection. No one else will enter with them. It will be said: ‘Where are the fasting ones?’ They will enter through it, and once the last among them has entered, it will be closed, and no one else will enter.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, mentioned: “May the nose of a man be rubbed in dust who hears my name mentioned and does not invoke blessings upon me. May the nose of a man be rubbed in dust who witnesses the month of Ramadan and it passes by without being forgiven. May the nose of a man be rubbed in dust who has elderly parents and does not enter Paradise through serving them.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, stated: “The five daily prayers, and the Friday prayer until the next Friday, and Ramadan until the next Ramadan, are expiations for the sins that occur in between, as long as the major sins are avoided.”
- He also said: “When Ramadan begins, the gates of Heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, affirmed: “Whosoever fasts Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven. And anyone who stands in prayer on the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will also be forgiven.”
Hadiths on Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)
Numerous Hadiths from the Prophet shed light on the virtues of remembrance and the most beloved forms of dhikr to Allah, The Exalted. Some notable mentions are:
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, narrated: “Whoever says ‘There is no deity but Allah alone, He has no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is capable of all things,’ one hundred times in a day, will have the reward of freeing ten slaves, will have a hundred good deeds recorded for him, a hundred sins erased, and will have protection from the devil for that day until evening.”
- He further stated: “Two words are dear to the Merciful, light on the tongue, heavy on the scales: ‘Subhanallah wa bihamdiHe, Subhanallah al-Azeem’ (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, Glory be to Allah the Great).”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “I would rather say ‘Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illallah (There is no deity but Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)’ than anything the sun rises upon.”
- To his companions, he asked: “Is anyone unable to earn a thousand good deeds every day?” One of them asked, “How could we earn a thousand good deeds?” He replied: “By saying one hundred tasbeeh (glorifications), which earns you a thousand good deeds or expiate a thousand sins.”
- He also mentioned: “Shall I not guide you to a word that is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise? The phrase is: ‘La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah’ (There is no power and no strength except through Allah).”
- “Whoever says ‘Subhanallah wa bihamdiHe’ one hundred times in a day, his sins will be erased even if they were like the foam on the sea,” reported the Prophet, peace be upon him.
- He acknowledged: “Indeed, my heart becomes clouded, and I seek forgiveness from Allah one hundred times a day.”
- He reiterated: “By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.”
Hadiths on Provisions (Rizq)
The noble Sunnah includes numerous supplications regarding provisions, including:
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, and Lord of everything, Splitter of the grain and the date seed, Revealer of the Torah and the Gospel, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every evil doer; You have control over him. You are the First and nothing is before You, and You are the Last and nothing is after You, and You are the Manifest and nothing is above You. Free me from debt and enrich me from poverty.”
- He advised: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness; and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.”
- The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, stated: “O Allah, there is no one who can prevent what You give, and no one who can give what You prevent, and the mighty cannot benefit from you against the mighty.”
