General Prayers

General Supplications

It is recommended to invoke a selection of supplications found in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Notable examples include:

  • (O Allah, I ask You for the ability to perform good deeds, to avoid sins, and to love the needy. If You intend to test Your servants, take me to You without being tested).
  • (O Allah, I have wronged myself excessively, and no one forgives sins except You. Grant me forgiveness from Your presence and have mercy on me, for You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful).
  • (O Allah, I ask You for all good, both immediate and delayed, what I know of and what I do not know. I seek refuge in You from all evil, both immediate and delayed, what I know of and what I do not know. O Allah, I ask You for the best of what Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and I seek refuge in You from the worst of what Your servant and Prophet sought refuge from. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and for everything that brings me closer to it, and I seek refuge in You from Hellfire and everything that brings me closer to it. I ask You to make every decree You have made for me a good one).
  • (O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, I seek Your help through Your mercy).
  • (O Allah, grant me an abundance of Your provision as I grow older and as my life draws to a close).
  • (O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light to my right, light to my left, light above me, light below me, light before me, light behind me, and grant me within myself light and increase my light).
  • (O Allah, keep me steadfast in Islam while standing, while sitting, and while lying down. Do not make my enemies or those who envy me rejoice over me. O Allah, I ask You for all goodness whose treasures are in Your hands, and I seek refuge in You from all evil whose treasures are in Your hands).
  • (O Allah, grant us enough fear of You that it shields us from disobeying You, and grant us sufficient obedience to bring us to Your Paradise. Bestow upon us certainty that makes the calamities of this world easier to bear. Bless us with our hearing, sight, and strength as long as You give us life. Make them the inheritance of our lineage, and grant us victory over those who have wronged us. Support us against those who oppose us. Do not let our hardships be in our religion, do not let this world be our greatest concern or the extent of our knowledge, and do not empower those who do not show us mercy over us).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, old age, hardness of heart, carelessness, poverty, disgrace, and humiliation. I also seek refuge in You from disbelief, immorality, hypocrisy, arrogance, and ostentation. Protect me from deafness, dumbness, insanity, leprosy, and all terrible diseases).
  • (O Allah, grant my soul its piety, and purify it; You are the best one to purify it. You are its Guardian and Helper. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not humble itself, from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a day of misfortune, from a night of misfortune, from an hour of misfortune, from an ill companion, and from a bad neighbor in my place of residence).
  • (O Allah, whomever believes in You and testifies that I am Your Messenger, grant them a love for meeting You, ease their affairs, and reduce their attachment to this world. And for those who do not believe in You and do not testify that I am Your Messenger, do not instill in them a love for meeting You, do not ease their affairs, and increase their attachments to this world).
  • (O Allah, with Your knowledge of the unseen, and Your ability over creation, grant me life as long as You know life is good for me, and take my soul when You know death is better for me. I ask You for Your fear in both hidden and revealed circumstances, and I ask You for the word of sincerity in both pleasure and anger, for moderation in both poverty and wealth, for lasting bliss, and for the joy of seeing Your face and longing to meet You without any affliction that brings harm or a trial that leads astray. O Allah, adorn us with the beauty of faith and make us guides who are guided).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Fire and its torment, from the trial of the grave and its punishment, from the temptations of wealth and the trials of poverty. I seek refuge in You from the evil of the trial of the Antichrist. O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify my heart from sins as You cleansed the white garment from dirt. Distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, sin, and debt).
  • (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and independence).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the removal of Your blessings, from the loss of Your health, from the suddenness of Your wrath, and from all forms of Your displeasure).
  • (My Lord, assist me and do not assist against me, grant me victory and do not grant me defeat, plan for me and do not plan against me, guide me and ease guidance for me, and support me against those who transgress against me. My Lord, make me one who is grateful to You, one who remembers You, one who fears You, one who obeys You, one who is humble with You, one who turns back to You. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my sins, respond to my supplication, guide my heart, strengthen my tongue, affirm my argument, and cleanse my heart of resentment).
  • (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure sustenance, and accepted deeds).

Quranic Supplications

Among the supplications mentioned in the Holy Quran, Muslims are encouraged to invoke them at any time. These include:

  • (Our Lord, accept from us; indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing).
  • (Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us mercy from Yourself, for You are the Bestower).
  • (Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy, and prepare for us right guidance in our affairs).
  • (My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and many from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication).
  • (He said, My Lord, expand for me my breast * and ease for me my task).
  • (And my Lord, increase me in knowledge).
  • (There is no deity except You; exalted are You; indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers).
  • (My Lord, let me land in a blessed landing place, and You are the best of those who bring people to land).
  • (My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous).
  • (Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader for the righteous).

Etiquettes of Supplication

When invoking Allah, it is essential for Muslims to adhere to certain etiquettes to ensure their supplications are accepted. These etiquettes include:

  • Avoiding any form of transgression against Allah, such as committing shirk (associating partners with Allah), introducing innovations in prayers, making requests that do not befit divine majesty, and praying for commands that contradict the wisdom and decree of Allah, such as asking for the Day of Resurrection not to be established. Approach Allah with respect and refrain from loud shouting in supplication.
  • Steering clear of unlawful earnings.
  • Persevering in making supplications and resisting hastiness or despair, for all has been decreed with divine wisdom.
  • Being sincere in one’s supplications, as commanded by Allah: (And invoke Allah, sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it).
  • Refraining from sinful behavior, repenting, and returning to Allah.
  • Repeating requests and being insistent in your supplications.
  • Choosing appropriate times, places, and circumstances for supplication.
