Short Sayings about Friendship
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conveyed several hadiths that highlight the significance of friendship and brotherhood in Islam. Here are some notable examples:
- In a narration from Sunan al-Tirmidhi, it is reported that a man passed by the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was surrounded by people. One of those present said, “I love this man for the sake of Allah.” The Prophet responded, “Have you informed him?” When the man said no, the Prophet advised him, “Go and tell him.” The man went to inform him, and the Prophet then said, “May Allah love you as you love him.” When the man returned and reported this to the Prophet, he commented, “You will be with those whom you love, and you will receive what you have accounted for.”
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, “Seven types of people will be shaded by Allah on a day when there is no shade except His. Among them is two men who love each other for the sake of Allah, they gather for that and part for that.”
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Support your brother, whether he is an oppressor or oppressed.” A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, I can help him if he is oppressed. But how do I help him if he is the oppressor?” The Prophet replied, “By preventing him from committing injustice, for that is helping him.”
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) expressed, “The believer to the believer is like a structure, each part supporting the other,” and he interlocked his fingers to illustrate this bond.
- It is authentically narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not guide you to something that if you do it, you will love one another? Spread peace among yourselves.”
Poetry About Friendship
Arabic poetry has provided numerous verses that speak to the themes of friendship and companionship. Here are some excerpts:
Choose your companion wisely, cherish them for pride,
For companions are attributed to their peers.
And when you see a friend who is inconsistent,
He is an enemy; his presence should be avoided.
There is no good in the friendship of one who seeks flattery,
With a sweet tongue while his heart burns with malice.
He meets you swearing he is loyal to you,
But when hidden, his true nature is that of a scorpion.
He offers you sweetness from the tip of his tongue,
Yet he evades you like a fox would evade.
As for Imam al-Shafi’i (may Allah be pleased with him):
If a person does not regard you except out of obligation,
Then let him be, and do not grieve excessively over it.
For among people, there are replacements, and in letting go, there is peace,
And in the heart, there is patience for a beloved, even if he turns away.
Not everyone you love will reciprocate your affection,
And not everyone you have beenfriend will remain true to you.
If the purity of love is not innate,
Then there is no goodness in a bond that comes from obligation.
And there is no benefit in a friend who betrays his confidant,
Who later treats him with indifference after affection has been shared.
And he denies a bond that has stood the test of time,
Expressing secrets that once were hidden yesterday.
Peace be upon this world if it does not contain,
A true friend who is sincere in his promises and just.
