Components of a Car Engine
The car engine serves to convert chemical energy into kinetic energy and is composed of several essential parts, including:
- Cylinder: This is where the combustion process occurs to generate energy for the engine.
- Piston: A cylindrical metallic piece that moves within the cylinder.
- Spark Plug: Responsible for delivering the electrical spark inside the combustion chamber to ignite the fuel.
- Valves: These regulate the intake of the air-fuel mixture into the cylinder, as well as the expulsion of exhaust gases from the engine.
- Piston Rings: These prevent the air-fuel mixture from leaking outside the combustion chamber into the engine’s body and also prevent engine oil from entering the combustion chamber.
- Connecting Rod: This component transfers the reciprocating motion from the piston to the crankshaft.
- Crankshaft: It converts the receding motion from the connecting rod into rotational movement.
- Oil Sump: This collects the engine’s lubrication oil for reuse.
Components of an Aircraft Engine
The turbofan engine of an aircraft consists of six primary components, which include:
- Fan: The fan draws in air from the external environment and directs it into the engine.
- Compressor: This component compresses the air in preparation for transfer to the combustion chamber.
- Combustion Chamber: The area where the combustion of the air-fuel mixture takes place.
- Turbine: It extracts some energy from the gases produced by combustion to drive the fan and compressor.
- Exhaust Nozzle: Located at the rear of the engine, it directs gases out of the engine, generating the thrust needed to propel the aircraft.
