Quranic Supplications

Qur’anic Supplications

The Holy Qur’an contains a variety of supplications that are believed to be answered when the proper etiquette and conditions of supplication are observed. Some of these include:

  • (And accept our repentance, for You are the Most-Relenting, Most-Merciful).
  • (Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing).
  • (Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people).
  • (Our Lord, grant us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire).
  • (Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or made a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us).
  • (Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and bestow upon us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower).
  • (My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearing of supplication).
  • (Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses in our matters and make firm our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people).
  • (Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers).
  • (Our Lord, do not make us among the oppressive people).
  • (Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the oppressive people).
  • (Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance).
  • (My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, accept my supplication).
  • (He said, My Lord, expand for me my breast and ease for me my task).
  • (My Lord, increase me in knowledge).
  • (There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers).
  • (My Lord, cause me to enter a good entrance and to exit a good exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority).
  • (My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the whisperings of the devils).
  • (My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous).
  • (My Lord, save me from the people of oppression).
  • (Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring coolness of eyes and make us an example for the righteous).
  • (My Lord, inspire me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants).
  • (Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering).

Prophetic Supplications

The prophetic traditions contain various established supplications, including:

  • (O Allah, You have perfected my creation, so perfect my character).
  • (O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light to my right, light to my left, light above me, light beneath me, light in front of me, light behind me, and grant me light).
  • (O Allah, preserve me in Islam as I stand, preserve me in Islam as I sit, preserve me in Islam as I sleep, and do not make my enemies rejoice over me, and do not make me an object of envy. O Allah, I ask You for all that is good, the treasures of which are in Your hand, and I seek refuge with You from all that is evil, the treasures of which are in Your hand).
  • (O Allah, let me live if life is good for me, and take me when death is better for me).
  • (O Allah, send us beneficial rain that is timely and helpful, not harmful).
  • (O Allah, help us to remember You, to give You thanks, and to worship You in a good manner).
  • (O Allah, forgive my sins and ignorance, and my excesses in my affairs, and whatever You know better than me. O Allah, forgive my seriousness and my silliness, and my errors and my deliberate faults, and all of these are with me. O Allah, forgive what I have done and what I will do, and what I have concealed and what I have revealed, and what You know better than me. You are the Expediter and You are the Delayer, and You are over all things competent).
  • (O Allah, suffice me with what is permissible, keep me away from what is prohibited, and enrich me with Your bounty from others).
  • (O Allah, indeed I seek refuge with You from poverty, from scarcity, and from humiliation, and I seek refuge with You from oppressing others or being oppressed).
  • (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and wealth).
  • (O Allah, I testify that You are Allah, there is no deity except You, the One, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent).
  • (O Allah, I ask You for the best of what I have been commanded to do and seek refuge with You from the worst of what I have been commanded to do).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from stinginess, and I seek refuge with You from cowardice, and I seek refuge with You from being returned to the lowest point in life, and I seek refuge with You from the trials of this world – which means the trials of the Antichrist – and I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from anxiety and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt, and from the overpowering of men).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the loss of Your blessings, the change of Your health, the suddenness of Your wrath, and all forms of Your displeasure).
  • (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done, and from the evil of what I have not done).

Etiquette and Conditions of Supplication

Allah Almighty has commanded His servants to make supplications and has promised them a response, subject to three conditions: firstly, sincerity of heart during supplication; secondly, dedication and truth in seeking Allah’s assistance, treating it as a form of worship; and lastly, ensuring that the supplication does not involve breaking family ties or committing sin. The etiquette of supplication begins with praise and gratitude to Allah, followed by sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and closing with the same. One should persist in supplication and maintain firm belief in the response, being mindful of the times when supplications are more likely to be accepted—including during the depths of night, the final moments before concluding prayer, and the time between the adhan (call to prayer) and iqamah (the second call to prayer).
