Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi

His full name is Abu Bakr Jabir bin Musa bin Abd al-Qadir bin Jabir Al-Jazairi. Born in 1921 in a small village called Liwa, which is in close proximity to the city of Touggourt, located in the Biskra province of southern Algeria, Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi has made significant contributions to Islamic scholarship.

Early Life of Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi

Abu Bakr grew up in Algeria, dedicating himself to the study of religious sciences and the Arabic language. He was particularly known for his strong commitment to memorizing the Holy Quran, as well as various classical texts in Arabic and jurisprudence related to the Maliki school of thought. Following his formative years in Liwa, he moved to the city of Biskra to further his education.

Education of Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi

In Biskra, he studied under various scholars and learned both transmitted sciences and rational sciences, which equipped him for a teaching role in local schools. Eventually, he relocated with his family to Medina, the city of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), where he immediately immersed himself in the educational environment. He participated in Quranic circles and attended teachings and lectures delivered by the scholars visiting the Prophet’s Mosque. His dedication culminated in receiving an authorization (ijazah) from the judicial authority in Mecca, which permitted him to take on the role of teacher at the Prophet’s Mosque due to his exemplary knowledge and character. Subsequently, he established a class to educate students on the memorization and interpretation of the Holy Quran as well as the sciences of Hadith.

Career of Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi

Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi served as a teacher in various schools affiliated with the Ministry of Education, and he also worked at Dar Al-Hadith in Medina. He was among the first educators at the Islamic University of Medina when it opened its doors in 1960 (1380 AH) and continued to teach there until his retirement in 1986 (1406 AH), spending an impressive twenty-six years at the institution.

Sheikh Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi is known for his extensive efforts in calling to Islam across numerous countries he has visited. To this day, he continues to deliver religious sermons at the Prophet’s Mosque. Recently, there were rumors regarding his passing; however, an official source has denied these claims, affirming that Sheikh Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi remains in good health.
