Fluctuations in Temperature

The deforestation process leads to significant fluctuations in temperature within forest ecosystems. This occurs as trees, which act as natural canopies blocking direct sunlight, are removed. During the day, trees provide essential shade, and at night, they help to maintain temperature levels. The absence of trees disrupts these temperature stabilizing effects, resulting in adverse impacts on the flora and fauna that inhabit these environments.

Extinction of Species

The extinction of certain species is a profound negative consequence of deforestation. Approximately 80% of the world’s terrestrial animal and plant species inhabit forests, and the removal of these habitats places numerous species at risk of extinction. Notable examples include various bird species, the orangutan, and the Sumatran tiger, all of which face heightened threats due to habitat loss.

Soil Degradation

Deforestation is characterized by the removal of tree cover, which plays a vital role in protecting and covering the soil. This disruption can lead to either drought conditions or severe flooding. When soil is exposed to direct sunlight continually, it is subjected to erosion, contributing to increased dryness. In areas where rainfall is common, trees normally absorb large quantities of water and store it in their roots. When these forests are eliminated, rain can fall without being absorbed, resulting in flooding and soil instability.

Increased Greenhouse Gas Emissions

One of the most significant negative impacts of deforestation is the increase in greenhouse gases. This rise is primarily due to the reduction of oxygen production, with trees being essential contributors to oxygen levels in the atmosphere. It is noteworthy that tropical rainforests in South America are responsible for producing approximately 20% of the world’s oxygen. However, these critical forests are being eliminated at an alarming rate, with around 40,000 square meters lost every decade. This trend poses serious threats for the future of our planet.
