Poems for the Teacher
Poem “With Knowledge, Nations Reach Their Greatest Glory”
This poem by Kahlil Gibran, a Lebanese poet and writer born in 1883, tragically passed away in New York in 1931 from tuberculosis. He studied art and founded “The Pen League” with his peers, serving as its president. Among his notable works are “Tears and Laughter,” “The Rebel Souls,” and “Broken Wings.”
With knowledge, nations achieve their greatest glory,
And there can be no advancement without knowledge for nations.
Oh, those who have been called forth, you answered with noble hearts,
Your generosity elicits the thanks of blooming gardens.
The generous bear the fruits of their good intentions,
With the bountiful blessings of grace and gifts.
For if you find generosity devoid of praise,
It may be but a tool of death masquerading as generosity.
The institutions of knowledge flourish with those who generously cultivate them,
Building paths for the future securely.
The one who lays a stone in the foundation of education
Establishes a legacy for his people, transcending time.
What a difference between a house that stifles its people
And a home that preserves its foundations.
The East has not suffered except from the heavy burdens
Of ignorance shepherded by the oppressors.
By it, the ignorant have lingered as though lost in time,
And now it is time to awaken from the void of nothingness.
Today, those who seek knowledge are denied their thirst,
Because those who are unaware remain sluggish.
Today, the slightest sustenance is forbidden to its seekers;
So work with your minds, lest you be deprived of what you gain.
Collectively, like individuals, those deprived of knowledge
Are subjected to the darkness of ignorance.
Therefore, teach; for there is no refuge
For you, nor escape from calamities and despair.
Raise your children well, for we have entered an era
Where people soar like eagles and vultures.
If we crawl, we must strive for the heights,
For none guide us but you, and no salvation exists without your help.
Oh, soul who has given more than the rest,
Your life concluded after long labor and suffering.
It is as if you stand above us, waving your banner,
While the echo of your voice lives on in our memories.
In our ears, we hear your cherished words of wisdom,
In moments like this, filled with eloquence.
Within our hearts, the vibrations from your light remain vivid,
Illuminating our minds like lightning in the dark.
You tasked us with a legacy, and taught us from your wisdom,
Guiding us through hardships, while life remained unyielding.
Your call has reached the steadfast, strong as it is.
Your home flourished, a beacon of hope,
While people held on to splendid aspirations.
Poem “Arise, O Teacher”
This poem by Ahmed Shawqi, a prominent Egyptian poet often referred to as the “Prince of Poets,” was born and died in Cairo. He published the first volume of “Al-Shawqiyyat” in 1890, was exiled by the British to Spain in 1914 due to World War I, and authored several well-known plays, including “The Death of Cleopatra,” “Leila’s Madman,” and “Kambyses.”
Arise, O teacher, and receive the honor,
For the teacher is almost a messenger.
Did you know of anyone more noble or greater than him,
Who builds and nurtures minds and souls?
Glory be to You, O God, Best Teacher,
Who taught the ancient worlds with the pen.
You brought forth this mind from its shadows,
And guided it to a clear, illuminated path.
You shaped it with the teacher’s hand,
Sometimes polishing it, other times refining it.
You sent Moses with the Torah as a guide,
And the son of the virgin taught the Gospel.
You unveiled the fountain of eloquence, Muhammad,
As he quenched our thirst with divine revelations.
You instructed both Greece and Egypt to rise,
Under every sun that seeks to shine.
And today, we find ourselves in a state of childhood,
Searching for knowledge that remains elusive.
From the east, the suns gather in harmony,
Yet the west falls behind in seeking its purpose.
O land, since the teacher lost his essence,
There is now separation between the suns and your horizon.
The champions of true knowledge are lost,
Finding themselves appeased by ignorance’s thrall.
In a world where life lives in shackles,
Deprived and bound, it becomes burdensome.
Socrates drank from the cup willingly,
Sweet to the lips of one who longs for a kiss.
They presented life to him in its folly,
But he rejected it, choosing to die noble.
Indeed, courage resides within many hearts,
Yet I find the brave minds to be few and far.
The one who created the bitter truth
Has not left a generation of honest seekers.
Perhaps love has brought death upon its champions;
Love has died—how often we let it slay.
Does everyone who defends truth hold grudges
Against the darkness of ignorance?
If I believed in the cross and its significance,
I would establish from Christ’s sacrifice a foundation.
O teacher of the valley and architect of youth,
Who shapes their futures, offering hope anew.
You bear the burden of this heavy trust so well,
So walk the path of your duty gracefully.
With each step of teaching after Muhammad,
We tread gently after Ibrahim.
We’ve seen Egypt take strides forward,
As if moving by the feet of knowledge.
Those in ignorance stumble, remaining blind,
And have not held a candle since the days of Khufu.
Do you find those who built the obelisk, their kin,
Not familiar with even the simplest tasks?
When asked to lead, they are delicate,
Remaining docile, much like the sheep.
Men recite their desires before them,
For the successful among them find pleasure.
Ignorance does not sustain communities,
How could life thrive with such succumbing?
By God, were it not for the articulate and the wise,
Words would spiral upon the clever youth.
It favors forty souls; none remain free,
Surfing the tides of despair, yet fostering hope.
It has identified where they falter, pouring out
As a stream that fills an ocean’s embrace.
Enrich the nations with your good deeds,
Fearing not the applause of gratitude.
It’s not in open praise nor teaching
That you shine the light to guide us.
Raise the noble youth, educating equality,
For only they will dissolve the burdens of injustice.
For the one who shapes character shall not waver,
And he who cultivates just spirits will yield.
Only the teacher can set right a crooked path,
Directing minds towards genuine truth.
When the teacher is just, the spirit of fairness grows,
And if the teacher’s vision is clouded,
What wisdom remains in insight’s flow?
When advisement stems from the whims of lust,
And the illusions of vanity, it will mislead.
And should one find their ethics weakened,
Set it as a grave to mourn, and declare your troubles.
Indeed, I feel for you and bear your burdens,
Amidst the vast weight of men who share.
Others have found help; you have been denied,
A profound support lacking in Egypt’s heart.
And when women are raised in ignorance,
Men shall fall into obsolescence and foolish ways.
Not the orphan, whose parents succumbed
To the cares of life, leading them astray.
Thoughts of Gratitude for the Teacher
First Reflection:
My dear teacher: words and phrases elude me, preventing me from organizing my gratitude and recognition for you. You are the shade-giving tree that bore the sweetest fruits for us to savor. You are the lighthouse guiding us through the darkness of ignorance, the blossom blooming in our hearts, nourished by your wisdom and culture. Without you, I would not be able to write a single letter, nor would knowledge find a place in my mind.
Second Reflection:
Teacher, congratulations for the chalk dust resting in your hands, and may the pages of the books you turned be eternally blessed as you deciphered the codes and phrases within. Glory be to you alone; through your efforts, nations rise, and aspirations reach new heights. Through you, too, dreams are transformed into reality. How many students have become diligent scholars because of you? How many have become doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, or pursued any other profession that once danced in their imaginations? You are, dear teacher, the embodiment of love and joy, the architect of life, the programmer of minds, and the conqueror of ignorance. It is no surprise that poets sing your praises because your essence enriches their verses.
